Within the framework of social and economic development, CWS Cambodia has cooperated with local NGOs since the start of the program. With their knowledge and expertise we are able to assist poor and vulnerable people by supplying grants, training and material to our partners. Partnership in the world of NGOs usually does not imply sharing both the victories and the defeats. However, CWS has found that the richness of its partnership program comes from just that – participating fully in the learning cycle that allows for mutual growth. Our philosophy is based on building relationships of mutual respect and assistance to local NGOs working within a framework of community development.
The CWS Partnership Program attributes its success to date on being accountable to all parties and pa rticipating in activities that change our relationships, behaviors, and attitudes from neutral to positive ones. Kumnit Thmey (KNTO), an organization based in Banteay Meanchey, is a good example of one of our partner NGOs. We have cooperated with KNTO for the last 6 years now and have jointly worked on several successful projects. KNTO works according to the same values and approach as CWS but has a particular expertise in local issues. KNTO's director, Leang Saorey, explains:
“KNTO was founded in 2001 because we had an urge to change something in the situation of poor villagers.” “In 2002 we first got in contact with CWS and after having been selected as a partner, we subsequently received our first grant of $5000.” “Due to the continued support from CWS, we have since been able to assist 1,414 families in 13 villages with getting access to water, food, health and personal development.” ”Our approach places local people central in their own development and because of that we are now even able to leave certain areas, for people to continue the development process by themselves.”
“Without CWS, we would never been able to do this!”
Besides supporting local NGOs like KNTO in community development, we also support many small local initiatives through grants, training or the sponsoring of exposure visits. CWS has a vision of a strong, vibrant and responsible NGO sector that addresses various development issues in Cambodia – a Cambodian NGO sector that is especially committed to empowering the poor to meet their basic needs in a sustainable manner. |
